Lex

Calla’s bestie wants us dead.

I suppose that's fair, considering her mother was killed by vampires, but that doesn't excuse Brighton asking Calla to help lure us out for the hunters to attempt to pick off.

Will she come out and tell us or will she decide to keep it from us?

The call ended abruptly almost an hour ago, and Calla hasn't come out of the bedroom since. Fifteen more minutes pass before she comes out, and I approach her in the hallway.

“I was wondering if you were going to join us again,” I say, grinning softly. “How's the arm?”

“Huh?” She shakes her head, refocusing on me. “Oh, it's fine. Kind of itchy but it doesn't hurt.”

I nod. “That's normal.” My eyes dance across her face, looking for any hint she might give up the information I'm waiting to hear.

“Yeah,” she says absently. “Um, thanks again. Maybe you can show me another time, and I'll try it on you.”

I nod slowly. “Is there anything else?”

Her pulse jumps and her eyes narrow a fraction. “What do you mean?” she asks, swallowing hard.

I shrug. “Nothing in particular. I was just curious. You look like there's something on your mind.”

“Lots,” she says.

“Anything worth noting?” I press.

“Is there something you want to talk about, Lex?”

I shake my head. “I don't know, Calla, is there?”

“Okay, why are you being weird?” She crosses her arms over her chest, pinning me with a glare. “And since when do you beat around the bush?”

I step closer, right into her personal space. “I thought I would give you a chance to tell me yourself.”

Calla stands her ground, her expression as tense as her posture is rigid. “I don't know what it is you want me to tell you.”

“Hmm, I’m pretty sure you do.” I snare her gaze, putting glamour behind my words as I say, “Tell me about the phone call with Brighton.”

She visibly shudders, gritting her teeth and staring at me hard. A few seconds pass. It turns into a minute, and she doesn't speak but she does look downright pissed, her eyes flashing with anger and her hands balling into fists at her sides.

“That is so fucking annoying,” I grumble, preparing to try again.

Gabriel comes up the stairs before I have a chance and says, “What's going on?”

I focus on Calla, lifting a brow at her. “Do you want to tell him, or should I?” I offer.

She looks as if she's about to tear my head off, which if I wasn’t so pissed, would be an absolute turn on. She keeps her arms crossed and focuses her attention on Gabriel, speaking to him as if I'm not even here. “Brighton texted me from a new number, so I called her. I think she's in a really bad place since her mom was killed and I think Scott got to her because—”

“She wants to kill us, essentially,” I cut in, leaning against the wall in the hallway. “And she wants our girl to help.”

Calla blows out an agitated breath. “It's not you in particular, it's just… it's vampires.
